Free DK Weight Crochet Patterns

DK weight sits between sport and worsted — fine enough for detailed stitches and drapey shawls, sturdy enough for structured garments and crisp amigurumi. It's the go-to weight for lightweight summer cardigans, baby items that need a soft finish, and any project where worsted feels too thick. DK yarn (also labeled "light worsted," "Category 3," or "8-ply" in Australian sizing) is the most underrated weight in crochet. It's the sweet spot for wearables: substantial enough to hold its shape, fine enough to drape well. A DK-weight cardigan has a completely different quality of hand than a worsted one — it moves with the body rather than stiffening around it.

Hook size for DK is typically 3.5–4.5mm (E/4 to G/6), though patterns vary. For garments, a 4mm hook in most DK yarns produces a fabric that's neither too stiff nor too open. For amigurumi in DK cotton (which is perfect for crisp stitch detail), drop to 3mm or 3.5mm for a tight, stuffing-hiding fabric. Popular DK choices: Paintbox Simply DK, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK, WeCrochet Swish DK (superwash wool).

Frequently asked questions

DK stands for "double knit" — it's a Category 3 / light worsted yarn, thinner than worsted but thicker than sport. It's roughly 200–250 yards per 100g skein and uses a 3.5–4.5mm hook. It's widely used in the UK and Australia; in the US, "light worsted" is the equivalent.

Not directly — you'll need to resize. DK has a smaller gauge (more stitches per inch), so the finished item will come out smaller. Use our pattern resizer to recalculate stitch counts for DK gauge, or generate a new custom pattern designed specifically for DK weight.

Lightweight summer cardigans and tops, shawls and wraps, baby items (especially garments and amigurumi), hats with a finer finish, and market bags with an open stitch pattern. Anything where worsted would feel stiff or heavy.

A large crescent shawl typically uses 400–600 yards of DK weight. A smaller cowl or neck wrap uses 200–300 yards. One standard 100g skein (around 230 yards) covers most cowl patterns.
