Free Beginner Crochet Cardigan Patterns

Crocheted cardigans have exploded in popularity — and for good reason. A granny-square construction means no complicated shaping, just individual squares joined together. A simple top-down raglan uses increases at four points to build the shape almost automatically. The most beginner-friendly cardigan construction is the granny-square join. Make 20–30 squares of the same size (your regular granny squares), then join them into front, back, and sleeve panels. No shaping, no counting complex increases — just squares and seams. The result is a relaxed, boho cardigan that fits a wide range of body sizes because the structure is flexible. For a first cardigan, make the squares, lay them out flat to check your arrangement, then join with a flat slip-stitch seam.

Yarn choice matters enormously for wearables. A cardigan in acrylic will be warmer and more washable, but it won't drape or breathe the way a wool-blend does. For your first cardigan, a wool-acrylic blend (Lion Brand Wool-Ease, Caron Simply Soft) gives the best balance: machine washable, soft, and drapey enough to wear comfortably. Budget for 1200–1800 yards of worsted weight or 1500–2200 yards of DK for a standard adult cardigan.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — with the right construction. A granny-square cardigan is the most beginner-accessible: make identical squares, join them. No shaping, no counting increases across a full row. If you've made 5–10 projects, you're ready.

For an adult medium in worsted weight: 1200–1800 yards. In DK weight: 1500–2200 yards. In bulky: 800–1100 yards. Always buy an extra skein from the same dye lot — running out one sleeve short is heartbreaking.

A simple granny-square cardigan takes 30–50 hours total (including the joining time). A top-down seamless pattern is similar. Plan for two to four weeks of regular crocheting — it's a commitment but not an unreasonable one.

For worsted weight: 5–5.5mm (H/8 or I/9). For DK: 4–4.5mm (G/6 or 7). Always do a 4×4 inch gauge swatch before you start — a cardigan that's 2 inches off gauge across the back panel won't fit.
