Worsted yarn pairs naturally with an H/5mm or I/5.5mm crochet hook for most projects. Acrylic worsted (Red Heart Super Saver, Caron One Pound) is durable, cheap, and washable — ideal for blankets, charity makes, and anything kids will touch. Cotton worsted (Lily Sugar'n Cream, Bernat Handicrafter) is heavier and absorbent — perfect for kitchen cloths, market bags, and baby items.
The single most useful upgrade once you've made a few projects in standard worsted: try one project in a wool-blend worsted like Patons Classic Wool or Lion Brand Wool-Ease. The drape and softness on wool-blend wearables are dramatically better than acrylic, and you'll see why some patterns specifically call for it.
Frequently asked questions
An H/5mm or I/5.5mm hook covers the vast majority of worsted patterns. Some patterns will specify a different hook to achieve a tighter or looser fabric — always follow the pattern's recommendation and check your gauge.
Almost. Worsted is the US term, aran is the UK / European term, and they're close enough that most patterns work interchangeably. Aran tends to run slightly heavier than American worsted; if substituting, check gauge.
Plan for 1200–1800 yards of worsted weight for an adult medium sweater, depending on length and stitch density. Buy one extra skein of the same dye lot in case you need it.
A washcloth, a dishcloth, a small amigurumi, a beanie, a pair of mittens, or a coffee-cup cozy. Most "one skein" patterns assume a standard 200–250 yard skein.
