Fair Isle Crochet

Also known as: Stranded colourwork

Two colours worked from a chart in single crochet, with the colour not in use carried loosely along the wrong side. The traditional look of snowflakes, peeries and reindeer bands, usually worked in the round.

How to Fair Isle Crochet

1. Read the chart from the bottom up; in the round, read every row from right to left. 2. Work each stitch in the colour the chart shows, changing colour on the last pull-through of the stitch before. 3. Let the unused colour lie loosely along the wrong side, and catch it under a stitch on long stretches so the float cannot snag.

💡 Pro Tips

Keep floats loose — spread the stitches on the hook before you change colour. Hats and yoke bands are the classic place for it.
